2024 CACTUS CANYON Grenache
CACTUS CANYON Grenache is a bright juicy wine with great acidity and fresh flavours. We pick at a moderate Baume to highlight the aromatic intensity of grenache and explore the floral and spice spectrums of this variety.
We ferment in open fermenter with a soft extraction during its ten day ferment. We then press to a selection of 3-4 year old French hogsheads for the completion of malolactic fermentation and a further six month maturation before bottling.
A young wine in to bottle, CACTUS CANYON has plenty of juicy red fruits but also some great fine tannin to add length and complexity. The nose shows classic aromas of lavender, pomegranate, white pepper and fragrant black tea. With a beautiful balance of fruit and spice aromas, the palate has fantastic mid-palate volume for a lighter bodied wine and is packed full of flavours of raspberry, spiced cherries and wild thyme. Importantly this grenache still has some structure and minerality with a very fine ripple of tannin giving length and a salivating moreish quality.
McLaren Vale's Best Grenache List - Young Gun of Wine:
“A pretty, high-toned nose – dehydrated strawberry, redcurrant dust, dried rose petals and lavender, deepened by a touch of red earth. The ‘dried’ theme continues on the palate – dried red berries, dried pomegranate, and hibiscus tea, with an undertone of dried forest floor. Incredible acidity – delightfully fresh and lithe. An amaro-like note of bitter herbs emerges and frames the flavours on the long finish.” - Terina Davies, wine merchant, Seddon Wine Store and Union Wine Store
“Really austere and svelte, cocoa nibs and bay leaf. Incredible power in the dark notes of this wine, has a inky, iron rich tone that feels rugged while being so gentle in its approach. Fine, magnetic tannins that envelope your mouth. A bloody banger.” - Tully Mauritzen DipWSET, freelance sommelier
