Our PYLA vineyard sits at the bottom of our hillside and is planted to Nero d'Avola, Carignan, Mourvedre, and Negroamaro with smaller amounts of Montepulciano and Grenache. The varieties are handpicked and fermented with a high proportion of whole berries.  After ferment the wine is transfered to seasoned oak barrels for 10 months prior to bottling  . Production: 120 dozen

 94 points Winefront "These are wonderful, savoury and charismatic wines. Their point of difference and drinking appeal makes them, well, so appealing. Purpleness, iron filings, aniseed, dried herbs and flowers, with boysenberry, red berries, and a little chocolate. It’s medium-bodied, cool and fresh in its balanced acidity, gentle but dense tannin, new leather and dried herbs, but with a subdued sweetness of fruit that keeps it all on track. Tops."

 

Notes on the 2016.... 

 

JAMES HALLIDAY – 95 points “Nero d'Avola, mourvedre, carignan and shiraz. Hand-picked, destemmed (not crushed) and fermented in beeswax-lined concrete vats, matured for 12 months in used oak. Light, clear crimson-purple; this has a super-fragrant bouquet, then a palate hosting a corps de ballet, all with different red, purple and blue fruit flavours. Just beautiful.

"Here’s something new. From Duncan and Peter Lloyd, sons of Mark Lloyd of Coriole, comes an indie project. The source is Coriole’s Blewitt Springs vineyard, not but the wine label is entirely separate. Nice to hear Duncan is back in the Coriole bosom after several years experience outside of the family winemaking fold. This is a wine that says ‘run, don’t walk’ to me. It’s a killer release. It’s also a blend of nero d’avola, mourvedre, carignan and shiraz. Spice of Arrakis! The sophist in me wants to say ‘red blends like this from McLaren Vale are far more interesting and far better as a motif from the region than bog standard shiraz’, but I won’t… meanwhile, are you serious, this is $25?!

This has tannin, tension, fragrance and beautiful layers of fruit flavour. It’s a wine that will please those seeking a throaty, hearty red while also giving the Italianate-leaning amongst us a good dose of savouriness, spice, herbal detail and chewy, al dente ribbons of tannin. It’s more red than black fruit spectrum, shows some silkiness despite the chomp of tannin, sits at medium weight. It’s a wine of style, complexity and deliciousness. Wonderful."
